Menar village, 45 kilometers from Udaipur, celebrates a unique and exciting festival called Jamra Beej every year. This special event takes place two days after Holi and is full of energy and rich history.
Why is Jamra Beej Celebrated?
Jamra Beej is celebrated to honor the brave victory of the Menaria Brahmins of Menar over the Mughal army almost 400 years ago.
During the reign of Maharana Amar Singh of Mewar, a Mughal camp near Menar caused problems for the villagers. To free their land, the people of Menar came up with a clever plan. They invited the Mughal soldiers to celebrate Holi with them. While everyone was enjoying the festivities, the villagers suddenly attacked, using swords, shields, and other weapons. By the end of the night, they defeated the Mughal army and protected their village.
Jamra Beej is a way for the villagers to remember and celebrate their bravery and unity.
What Happens on Jamra Beej?
The festival is like a grand war scene brought to life.
Sword Dance and Guns Villagers dress in traditional white clothes with saffron turbans and perform a special dance called the Gair dance. They hold swords and dance to drumbeats while some people shoot guns and even cannons into the air. It is loud, fiery, and thrilling to watch.
Five Groups Meet at the Chowk Five groups of villagers come from different directions, marching to the main square (Omkareshwar Chowk). They bring torches, swords, and guns, creating an intense atmosphere that looks like a battlefield.
Rituals and Lights Before the dances, a red carpet is spread at the square, and rituals are performed. The whole village is lit up like Diwali, with bright lights and fireworks.
Women Sing Heroic Songs Women in the village sing songs about bravery and follow the men, carrying pots on their heads. Their songs add an emotional touch to the event.
